Viennese Sablés (Marquisettes)

I have always loved Delacre’s Marquisette cookies, which I used to purchase from specialty stores growing up. When I returned home from university, I was dismayed to find that they were no longer available at any of the places I had used to frequent, and knew that I had to try to make some viable alternative.  The principal issue I’ve had in making these sablés is getting them to retain their ‘shell’ shape. Since the mixture has the consistency of… Continue Reading

Ube Cake

My mother, having spent her childhood in the Philippines, loves ube, a purple yam commonly enjoyed there — so, for her birthday, I knew I wanted to try making her an ube cake. It took a little experimentation to get both the texture and flavor right, especially as the flavor of ube can be quite subtle, but I was rather pleased with the end result and am excited to share it! If you’ve never had ube, it’s a little difficult to describe how… Continue Reading

Goat Cheese Cheesecake

I quite like cheesecake, but was never motivated enough to try making it myself — until I tried the goat cheese cheesecake at one of my favorite restaurants in San Diego, The Smoking Goat. It was love at first bite, and I knew I had to try recreating it, especially after moving away from SoCal post-college. Now, goat cheese cheesecake may sound a little off-putting at first blush, but the only real difference between it and classic cheesecake is that… Continue Reading

Black Forest Cake

Black forest cake has long been among my personal favorites, so much so that I used to go to the bakery and buy a full 9″ one for no occasion at all, and just eat it for dessert throughout the week. I was, however, much less a fan of paying the requisite $40 each time I allowed myself that particular indulgence. So I tried to make my own, and after some trial and error, this is the result! To be… Continue Reading

Mango Cake

My family loves mango, and I love cake (I do, it so happens, also love mango), so it made sense to try putting the two together. The result was this lovely mango cake, which has mango puree in the cake itself, the cream, and spread generously between layers and on top. I must admit that I find it a bit tedious to make, but I think the end product is well-worth it and has been quite popular with my friends… Continue Reading
