Viennese Sablés (Marquisettes)

I have always loved Delacre’s Marquisette cookies, which I used to purchase from specialty stores growing up. When I returned home from university, I was dismayed to find that they were no longer available at any of the places I had used to frequent, and knew that I had to try to make some viable alternative.  The principal issue I’ve had in making these sablés is getting them to retain their ‘shell’ shape. Since the mixture has the consistency of… Continue Reading

Ube Cake

My mother, having spent her childhood in the Philippines, loves ube, a purple yam commonly enjoyed there — so, for her birthday, I knew I wanted to try making her an ube cake. It took a little experimentation to get both the texture and flavor right, especially as the flavor of ube can be quite subtle, but I was rather pleased with the end result and am excited to share it! If you’ve never had ube, it’s a little difficult to describe how… Continue Reading

Goat Cheese Cheesecake

I quite like cheesecake, but was never motivated enough to try making it myself — until I tried the goat cheese cheesecake at one of my favorite restaurants in San Diego, The Smoking Goat. It was love at first bite, and I knew I had to try recreating it, especially after moving away from SoCal post-college. Now, goat cheese cheesecake may sound a little off-putting at first blush, but the only real difference between it and classic cheesecake is that… Continue Reading

Black Forest Cake

Black forest cake has long been among my personal favorites, so much so that I used to go to the bakery and buy a full 9″ one for no occasion at all, and just eat it for dessert throughout the week. I was, however, much less a fan of paying the requisite $40 each time I allowed myself that particular indulgence. So I tried to make my own, and after some trial and error, this is the result! To be… Continue Reading

Seared Scallops with Herb Butter

Scallops are probably my favorite seafood item — I used to order them, quite consistently, at restaurants when I was in the mood to splurge a bit but still always felt somewhat guilty spending so much on (at least, quantitatively) so little; so I thought I would try to see if I could cook them for myself. I was delighted to find that scallops are relatively straightforward to prepare! So much so, in fact, that I no longer order scallops… Continue Reading

Turkey Meatloaf

Meatloaf is one of my favorite comfort foods and can be delightfully straightforward to make — it is, after all, exactly what its name suggests: a loaf of meat. Still, there are many different ways in which you can vary the recipe, from the type of ground meat you choose to use (beef, pork, turkey, or perhaps some combination of all of them together), to the sauces you mix into the glaze (a lot use ketchup), and so on. Mango Cake

My family loves mango, and I love cake (I do, it so happens, also love mango), so it made sense to try putting the two together. The result was this lovely mango cake, which has mango puree in the cake itself, the cream, and spread generously between layers and on top. I must admit that I find it a bit tedious to make, but I think the end product is well-worth it and has been quite popular with my friends… Continue Reading

Baked Salmon with Garlic Butter

Salmon is a staple of my diet at school, as much for its convenience as for its widely touted health benefits. Baked salmon in particular is the poster child of convenience — it only really needs a modest amount of seasoning (though I must admit that I, personally, like a little more), and then you can stick it in the oven and leave it alone with minimal supervision, and know that you will have a nice hot meal minutes later. These… Continue Reading

Quick Stuffed Mushrooms

I always enjoy a good stuffed mushroom, but had never had the occasion to try making them myself until I invited an old friend over for dinner, and learned that he was vegetarian. At the time I had no idea what to make — my go-to dishes for dinner guests are typically items such as pot roast or meatloaf — and was very perplexed as to what to serve. And so these quick stuffed mushrooms were born! What I like about… Continue Reading

Tomato Egg Noodles (西红柿鸡蛋面)

To clarify, this is my interpretation of tomato egg noodles — a more authentic version, I’ve heard, can be made with just the three ingredients comprising the name of the dish. Nonetheless, this spin-off is tasty in its own right, and remarkably easy to make! I stumbled upon it one night in law school when I was short on groceries and unable to go out and purchase more, due to a shelter-in-place order; and so, when dinner time rolled around, I… Continue Reading
